This year’s projects for the Mothership will revolve around fighting gentrification. It is a well know fact that once the “artists” show up in a neighborhood of predominantly non-white citizens, it becomes a neighborhood at risk of development. This development almost never supports the resident community and places them at risk of loosing established neighbors in lieu of condos, Starbucks and Chipoltle. We want to work against this trend.
Three things are going to happen in the next year. The first, “Homework Help” is a service offered to residents of Swansborough and Manchester after school starting at 3:00pm every Wednesday beginning in September. We will offer a healthy snack, and tutoring or just quiet space to read and relax until 6:00pm. We are looking for volunteers for this program, you must pass a background check and have experience working with 9-17 year olds.
The second, is a gathering, the date TBD to listen to residents and community leaders of Swansborough and Manchester to see what they feel is a positive way to utilize The Mothership.
Lastly is to implement the idea put forth at these meetings that shows the most promise as an aid to the community.
As the date of the meeting is set, a sign up sheet will be attached to the website.
Moonshine, RPGs, a specially brewed batch of beer with an artist (Wayne) made label. Gaming gaming and more gaming. I managed to film three of the 12 participants before one of the last days descended into a NOFX fueled chaos.
Thank you to all of you wonderfully weird people involved in WayneCon. People came from all over the country to play games and have fun. It was a pretty amazing time.
This Sunday, being mother’s day, is a day to celebrate your mom, or if you are a mom, to celebrate yourself. The Temple will be at Music in the Park at 5:00pm in Forrest Hill Park.
Bring a blanket, some food to share, and some libations … look for the flag.
Guess what? The City of Richmond’s zoning and code enforcement has issued a stop work order and violation for The Mothership.
I have contacted the ACLU and hope that we can get this worked out.
This is not surprising, considering they depend on Style Weekly articles to do their research and are masters at retaliation.
Until further notice church services have been delayed. I hope to see you on a Sunday soon!
Heide aka “The Oracle”
Saturday was so rainy and cold, but Cupid Ojala and The Temple managed to draw in enough people to keep a constant stream of Prescriptions.
Video and images can be found on Cupid’s FB:https://www.facebook.com/cupid.ojala?fref=nf and Instgram: https://instagram.com/cupidojala/
Thank you to everyone that came out in the awful weather!
Especially these two! J Deron and Sharon Walker.
The Kinetic Imagery Department at VCU proudly presents.
On April 25 2015 Cupid will be writing free LovePrescriptions at Temple of the Cosmic Mothership. He is acting as Cupid and channeling Freud to become this character. As an authority on Love, he is generously listening to each visitor and prescribing advice for desires such as love, passion and dreams. Prescriptions will be written in India ink on parchement. He will be available for consultation from 12pm – 4pm.
So now that I am at the helm of the Mothership, I would like to lay out some plans for my vision. Since the conception and original idea with LoveBomb, I have always wanted to have a space where artists pay for the overhead with their studio rent, and allowed for other larger things to happen. The space had to be large to accommodate the artists studios, and have additional space for the common/community areas. The space also needed to be really low cost because, even artists with work in the marketplace have feast and famine.
The artists not only contribute to the rent (which is minimal), but teach classes, plant gardens, and create a community where creativity and activism can be a small revolution. Fighting gentrification through being a support to the encompassing neighborhood, outskirting Capitalism with trading and volunteerism, and creating a resource for artists and children.
The Mothership is a place for anyone who needs it, and I will keep the vision open to change. Meanwhile I am working as hard as I can to create this space as an experiment, as an art project, and as a “place of worship” where creativity, alternative ideas, and personal connections are the focus.
This Friday (today) will begin the first of many gardening days. We are going to have lettuces, broccoli, spinach, squash, beans, peas, carrots, asparagus and flowers.
The herbs so far are just run of the mill cooking herbs, basil, thyme, fennel. If you know of anyone with seeds for medicinal herbs please let them know we want a medical care garden as well.
Thank you so much to the Kinetic Imagery studio practices class from VCU for their assistance!
